Mind flex: Host an at-home fall or harvest party

The fall season is likely going to look a lot different this year, so why not make the best of it with an at-home festive fall or harvest party? Try these ideas to make it a pumpkin-spiced good time:

■ Pick your theme

Setting a theme for a party always helps to set the stage. You might want to host a pumpkin carving, memorable movie, bonfire or celebration for a cause party.

■ Set a date and time

Decide the date and time for your fall harvest party. Even if it’s only your immediate family attending, make fun invitations and send them out.

■ Do decorate!

Take some time to come up with some fun decorating ideas. Use hay bales and pumpkins and gourds of all sizes. Replace regular light bulbs with colored ones to add a bit of whimsy and a cool effect. And incorporate the rich colors of fall using mums, leaves, scarecrows and blankets on top of hay bales. The options are limitless…so be creative!

■ Line up some games and activities

You could watch outdoor movies, have a make-your-own pizza bar or play games. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Backyard bonfire or campfire

Festive lanterns, picnic baskets full of delicious s’mores 'fixins,' and comfy sleeping bags…backyard campfire parties are always a neighborhood hit! Cozy campfires create the perfect setting for good conversation, yummy treats and lots of laughs.

Apples, apples, apples

This is the perfect time of year to have some festive fun with apples. From bobbing for apples to a create-your-own caramel apple buffet, there’s no better time to keep the doctor away with your apple a day.

Guess the number of pumpkin seeds in the jar

Fill a large jar with dried pumpkin seeds. Place a piece of paper next to the jar and have each child write down their guess (don’t forget to have them write their name too). You can decorate the jar with a fall-themed ribbon. For a different twist, you can also use candy corn instead of pumpkin seeds.

Pumpkin bowling

Use six empty two-liter soda bottles for the pins. You can have kids cut out fall-themed shapes from construction paper and glue them to the bottles for decoration. Purchase several hand-size pumpkins to be used as your bowling balls (be sure to remove the stems). Assign a little helper to assist you with resetting the pins. This game is fun for kids of all ages.

Have a fabulously festive fall party!
