Virtual CPA Tax PreparationTax Preparation for Washington DC Residents
YRL Group prepares federal and District of Columbia income tax returns for residents of all eight wards. You work remotely with a CPA who knows how DC residency, multi-state income, and District credits fit together, and you get an upfront quote before any work starts. As a virtual CPA practice, we handle everything online.
Why DC returns need a careful review
The District taxes residents at graduated rates from 4% to 10.75% and files on Form D-40, even though DC is not a state. DC cannot tax the wages of people who live in Maryland or Virginia, so residency drives everything on a District return.
That creates real filing questions for a mobile workforce. People who moved into or out of the District mid-year, residents with income from Maryland or Virginia sources, and nonresidents who had DC tax withheld by mistake all need their returns handled differently. We sort that out before anything is filed.

DC tax return questions
Do I pay DC income tax if I work in DC but live in Maryland or Virginia?
No. DC taxes only District residents. If DC tax was withheld from your pay in error, you may need to file to get it back, and your employer should have a nonresident certificate on file.
What is the DC income tax rate?
DC uses graduated rates from 4% to 10.75%. Your marginal rate depends on taxable income, and each rate applies only to the income within its bracket.
I moved to DC this year. Which returns do I file?
Usually a part-year DC return plus a part-year return for the state you left. Income is split based on the dates you lived in each place.
When are DC returns due?
DC individual returns are due on the federal deadline, generally April 15.
Who prepares my return?
A licensed CPA. You work with the same CPA from document review through filing, and you approve the return before anything is submitted.
